Do Sole Traders Need an Accountant

There is no general HMRC rule that says every sole trader must use an accountant. Many sole traders register, keep records, and file their own returns. The better question is whether your records, confidence, and available time are strong enough to do it accurately yourself.

When doing it yourself is more realistic

DIY filing is most realistic when you understand your deadlines, keep records throughout the year, and can explain your income and expenses clearly.

It becomes harder when you leave bookkeeping until January, have multiple income streams, or are unsure how HMRC's rules apply to your position.

When an accountant may help

An accountant can help if you want someone else to review the numbers, explain HMRC rules, or keep the filing process moving on time.

Even then, you still need to keep records and stay aware of your own deadlines. Paying for help does not remove your responsibility to act.
